2013 gave us a wonderful shake-up of psychedelia and punk, and produced a successive revival in guitar music, which in a community vastly embracing electronica and house gave us a warming relief. There were many more worthy candidates for great albums this year, notably the rise of Joanna Gruesome, Swearin', and Speedy Ortiz to name but a few, and lets hope for more of the same, come 2014.

Brighton four-piece BAYY with new single 'Left On Earth'.

A dreamy, pop track from the Brighton gang. Contents of 'ooo's' and drone make for a sun-kissed track of delightful resonance. I had the pleasure of chatting to Angus, Max, Soph and Paeris (BAYY) prior to their show at 60 Million Postcards in Bournemouth, which you can read about in the next issue of Pebble in the forthcoming future.

Track is available as a Postcard Single via 'Art is Hard Records'

For now, lay back and check out 'Left On Earth' below.

rollerblades

21st January 2013
Warp Records
6/10

‘Rollerblades’ is the latest track released by London artist Kwes. An experimental merge of idiosyncratic elements. His music uses an entirely unique and creative set-up through guitar, synths and drums and those are paired with the enchanting voice of the man himself. Previous singles ‘Get Up’ and ‘Igoyh’ are also sounding very different to the latest record. The record is playful and enjoyable and is a grand example of experimental music. Kwes live performance at Green Man 2012 showed a shy and timid character that delivered a polished sound, perhaps due to lack of experience but certainly an artist beginning to gather recognition.

Foxygen
We are 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic
8/10

Los Angeles' Foxygen have released their second album We are 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic, an album that illustrates the enjoyable musical sounds of the 60s. For an album that has been labelled under the pyschedlia of the 60s and the proto-punk sound of the 70s, the album feels entirely fresh and accessible considering its archaic style. This album come after a string of bands attempting to revive the psychdelia David Bowie/Todd Rundgren days of the 60s/70s. Bands such as Temples, Tame Impala, Pond are examples of revivers of the pyschedlia sound, and Foxygen are the latest added to the list. The jagger-esque twangly vocals of Sam France give the album its Rolling Stones re-created feel.

Amidst twangly guitars, rhythmic drums, authentic organs, the ‘ooo’s’ the ‘aahhs’ and the handclaps, the record itself is superb. The style of music may not be self-created, but the pure essence of the 60s is exemplified throughout the entirety of the record. Influences from The Rolling Stones, The Doors, Bob Dylan and The Stooges are something to be proud of, it proves as a shrine to the pioneers of 60s music, as it is still such an accessible, easy-listening and enjoyable style of music.

It’s playful characteristics and nonsensical lyrics such as “cos it’s arms and legs, bacon and eggs” are easily ignored due to the conviction delivered by France. Records ‘On Blue Mountain’ and ‘Oh Yeah’ are wonderful examples of the diverse genres the 60s created, and on the whole the concept and idea behind the record is successful.

For these two 22 year olds to create a record that if it were to be released 50 years ago, it would still be catergorised as the pure essence of the 60s, whether the record would be up their with Stooges, Stones and Doors we will never know. However the record as a 60s concept is utterly enjoyable and addictive.

'Dropla'

Youth lagoon has returned with new single 'Dropla', the new single is an enjoyable adventure in comparison to previous album, the drab 'Year of Hibernation', A very strong album, yet one filled with melancholy and gloom. 'Dropla' seems a step in the right direction for the man behind the name, Trevor Powers. It's always nice to see an artist that can create something diverse to a previous sound. The new single is from the second album 'Wondrous Bughouse' set for release early March. A different sound that hints at a new direction for Youth Lagoon.

  FOXYGEN

Heavily 60s influenced Foxygen have released new material entitled "No Destruction", for lovers of Girls, Spirtualised, Kurt Vile, The Rolling Stones. Foxygen are worth a listen. The record is from the forthcoming album 'We are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic'

  PEACE

Birmingham boy's Peace have released another single earlier this week, new single 'Wraith' is available as a 12" with b-side 'Scumbag'. 'Wraith' is another classic song released by the band who are releasing their debut album later on in the year. For lovers of Splashh, Swim Deep or even Foals. I give you, Peace.

  DAVID BOWIE

David Bowie returned to the music industry this week with the release of new single 'Where are we now?'. An entirely different sound to the funky, eccentric days of the 70s/80s Ziggy Stardust. For lovers of Bowie tune in to his new single, just to show great admiration for a fine musical producer.

 SWIM DEEP
'The Sea'

Birmingham boys Swim Deep have returned with new single 'The Sea', a brand new sound by a band vastly being tipped as ones to watch for 2013. Previous singles 'King City' and 'Honey' are just as enjoyable as this new refreshing song 'The Sea'. This record is a more tranquil take on the bands playful and optimistic sound. Austin's teasing vocals compliment a track that feels uniquely 90s sounding through a mess of organ and cowbells. The simplicity of Swim Deep's soft surf-pop is what works, a band that have already released many well-recognised songs and seem capable of creating many more.
